Recent rains delaying Iowa harvest
The recent rainy weather is putting a record harvest on hold and leaving Iowa farmers frustrated.
More rain fell across the state on Thursday, Oct. 22, leaving fields too wet to support heavy farm equipment.
Jasper County farmer Roger Zylstra said Thursday that all the farmers in his area are two to three weeks behind schedule.
The situation is the same in Story County, where Brad Essick of the Heartland Co-op says most farmers won’t be able to return to the fields until Monday at the earliest.
Essick said the rain is also making the harvest more expensive. The corn that has come into the co-op has about 22 percent moisture. It’s so wet that it will turn moldy in the bin unless farmers pay extra to dry it out.
