Will Allen has been honored for his work as an urban farmer and founder of Growing Power in Milwaukee. Now he’s being honored for his basketball career.
Allen will be introduced as an Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Legend representing the University of Miami at the ACC Tournament.
In 1967, Allen became the first African-American scholarship athlete recruited to the University of Miami. He’s still listed in the Miami record books as holding second-place all-time for rebounds and the first-place mark in free-throw attempts.
He now lives in Milwaukee and co-founded Growing Power in 1995. It develops urban farming techniques and teaches young people how to grow food in poor, inner-city neighborhoods.
The tournament starts Thursday in Greensboro, N.C. He and others will be honored on Saturday (March 13).
