Several Wisconsin Holstein exhibitors made the trek to The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Nov. 12-13, in the city of Toronto, including the 2009 World Dairy Expo supreme and grand champion of the International Holstein Show, Harvue Roy Frosty, a 5-year-old co-owned by Mike and Julie Duckett, Jim and Nancy Junemann, and Dr. Scott Armbrust.

The crowd waited in anticipation as once again it became a showdown between the same two champion cows from Expo, Frosty and the reserve grand Holstein, Thurlane James Rose, an aged cow shown by Pierre Boulet, of Montmagny, Quebec.

This time around the aged cow came out smelling like a “rose,” as she was tapped for grand champion honors by judge Barclay Phoenix, Uxbridge, Ontario, and associate judge Roger Turner, Guelph, Ontario, and she’s been fresh since before the 2008 World Dairy Expo. Last year Rose was named both grand and supreme champion of World Dairy Expo and The Royal.

The reserve grand champion is housed by the Ducketts and Junemanns, of Rudolph, Wis. Currently classified Excellent 95, Frosty was bred by Dave and Debra Hardesty, of Berryville, Va. Her 305-day lactation at 3 years and 10 months of age is 31,685 pounds of milk with 4.5 percent butterfat, 1,436 pounds and 934 pounds of protein. According to Armbrust, a Green Bay, Wis., veterinarian who specializes in embryo transfer work, as a 5-year-old, she’s on track to produce over 50,000 pounds of milk.

Frosty was the 2007 all-American senior 3-year-old, intermediate and reserve grand champion of the 2007 International Holstein Show and nominated all-American senior 2-year-old in 2006.

The winner of the senior 2-year-old class, Sherona-Hill-JH Rachel, exhibited by Mike and Sheryl Deaver, Edgerton, Wis., Hanoverhill Holsteins, and Joe Hoffman, went on to become the reserve intermediate champion.

Wisconsin natives Cybil Fisher and Jason Mell, along with Trent Valley Holsteins and Pat Conroy, were part owners of the junior champion female, T-Triple-T Gold Prize, winner of the winter yearling class. In addition, Mell owned part of the third-place winter heifer, Kingsway Goldwyn Abrakazoo, with Kingsway Farm, Sharp Acres Holsteins and Trent Valley Holsteins.

KY-Blue GW Debbie finished second in the summer yearling class for Nick and Jessica Sarbacker, Verona, Wis., and Matthew and Lauren Evangelo.

Milk Source Genetics, Kaukauna, landed second in the junior 2-year-old class with Brainwave Goldwyn Lauramie, and were fifth in the junior 3-year-old class with Lookout Mr Sam Flo.

Shane Nodolf, Belmont, Wis., placed fifth with his 5-year-old, Stone-Front Advent Laverne.

Wisconsin also made its presence known during the Red & White Holstein Show.

Five-year-old KHW Regiment Apple-Red from Apple Partners, Edgerton, Wis., found her way to the winner’s circle when she was recognized as the reserve grand champion. Honorable mention grand champion as well as intermediate champion was awarded to the first-place senior 2-year-old, Silvermine Adv Tally-Red from Milk Source Genetics.

Milk Source Genetics also brought out the fourth-place 5-year-old, Stone-Front Rub Indigo-Red, the first-place junior 3-year-old, Moy Hall Rubens Truth, the class-winning junior 2-year-old, Budjon-Nitzy Destiny-Red, the fourth-place junior 2-year-old, Bri-Mel Advent Arika-Red, the first-prize winter yearling, L-Maples KHW Shari-Red, and the fourth-place spring yearling, Dodgecrest Adv Tequila-Red.

Two other Wisconsin exhibitors placing in the top five of their respective classes were David Preder and Rodney Bohnhoff, Sheboygan Falls, who finished second-place in the fall yearling class with Scenic-Edge Jellybean-Red, and James and Nancy Junemann, Rudolph, who captured second place in the junior 2-year-old class with Greenlea Advent Leta-Red.
